The humble graph paper stationery is a common choice for paper notebooks because of its flexibility. The grids make recording and annotating structured data easy, and also allow for clean notes on the horizontal rules. Illustration is easy, too, using the intersections of the horizontal and vertical gridlines as a dot guide.
Graph paper can be configured with a margin line in the left, center, or right of the paper. You can adjust the density of the grid to suit different writing styles and illustration needs.
